WhatsApp Business AI in India: How a Small Shop Should Set It Up

Meta launched Business AI on WhatsApp for Indian small businesses in May 2026. Here is what it can do, what to feed it, where it goes wrong, and a safe setup plan for shops, clinics and service businesses.
WhatsApp Business AI, launched by Meta for Indian small businesses on 7 May 2026, can answer customer questions around the clock using your catalogue, documents and business profile. It works in Indian languages, can capture leads and book appointments, and you can step into any chat or switch it off. It is genuinely useful for repetitive questions, but it is only as good as the information you give it.
What it can do well
Based on Meta's announcement, Business AI can:
- Answer common questions: timings, location, prices, availability, delivery areas
- Recommend products from your WhatsApp catalogue
- Capture leads and book appointments
- Reply in the customer's language, including Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali and others
- Hand over to you when a person is needed
Meta has also said in-chat payments over UPI are coming to Business AI. Check the app for whether this is live for your account.
What it should not do alone
AI replies are confident even when they are wrong. Keep a person in charge of:
- Prices for custom work, discounts and negotiations. An AI that offers the wrong discount creates an awkward conversation.
- Medical, legal or financial advice. Clinics in particular should limit the AI to timings, bookings and directions.
- Complaints and refunds. An unhappy customer wants a human.
- Anything not in your documents. If the answer is not in what you uploaded, the AI should say so and hand over.
A safe setup plan
- Update your WhatsApp Business profile first. Address, hours, website and a short description. The AI uses this.
- Build or clean your catalogue. Correct names, prices and photos. Remove items you no longer sell.
- Write a one-page FAQ document. The 20 questions customers ask most, with your exact answers. Include what you don't do ("We do not deliver outside city limits").
- Set the boundaries. In the AI settings, tell it which topics to hand over to you.
- Test it as a customer. Ask 20 questions from another phone, including tricky ones. Fix the documents where answers are wrong.
- Check chats daily for the first two weeks. Look for wrong answers and missed hand-overs.
Example FAQ entries that work well
| Customer asks | Good source answer |
|---|
| "Are you open on Sunday?" | "Yes, Sunday 10 am to 2 pm. Closed on Diwali day." |
| "Do you deliver?" | "Free delivery within 3 km for orders above ₹500. Outside 3 km, we will confirm by message." |
| "What is the price of X?" | Keep prices in the catalogue, not the FAQ, so there is one place to update. |
Costs to watch
The WhatsApp Business app's AI is free to start for eligible businesses. Businesses using the WhatsApp Business API through a provider pay per conversation or per AI usage under Meta's pricing, which has changed during 2026. Check the current rates with your provider before scaling up.
Where BizFlow fits
Business AI answers questions; it does not keep your sales pipeline. BizFlow's WhatsApp CRM records every lead, assigns follow-ups to staff and links conversations to invoices, so a question answered at midnight becomes a sale the next morning.
