Garment Shops: Managing Size and Colour Inventory Without Chaos

One shirt design in five sizes and four colours is twenty stock items. How garment shops can manage variants, reorder the right sizes, reduce leftover odd sizes and bill fast.
Garment retail multiplies inventory: one design in five sizes and four colours is twenty separate items. Shops typically run out of the popular sizes while odd sizes pile up. Managing variants as one product with sizes and colours, and reordering by size data, fixes most of it.
Set up products with variants
Create one product (for example, "Cotton kurta – Design 112") with variants for each size and colour. Each variant gets its own barcode and stock count, while reports roll up to the design.
Read your size curve
Your sales by size form a "size curve". For example:
| Size | Share of sales (example) |
|---|
| S | 15% |
| M | 30% |
| L | 30% |
| XL | 18% |
| XXL | 7% |
Use your own data. Curves differ by category, customer base and location.
Order new designs in proportion to your curve, not in equal quantities per size.
Reorder by variant
When a design sells well, reorder the sizes and colours that sold out, not the whole set. Your system should show sell-through by variant.
Deal with odd sizes early
- Move slow sizes to a "last few" rack after a set number of weeks.
- Bundle or discount them before the season ends.
- Feed the data back into the next order.
Billing and returns
- Barcode tags with design, size and colour make billing exact.
- Exchanges for a different size should be recorded as a return and a new sale, so stock stays right.
Seasonal planning
Festive, wedding and summer seasons change what sells. Compare last season's sell-through by design type and size before ordering.
Where BizFlow fits
BizFlow supports size-colour variants with individual barcodes, variant-wise stock and sell-through reports, and exchange handling that keeps stock accurate. See BillFlow and barcode POS.
Frequently asked questions
Q: How should garment shops order sizes?
A: In proportion to their own size curve from past sales, then reorder only the variants that sell out.
Q: How do I handle size exchanges in billing?
A: Record the returned item and the new item separately so stock for both sizes stays accurate.
